Pearl Hoel lived a long and full life. She was born November 10,1905 and passed away on February 27,2005, not quite reaching her 100th year goal. She was active and interested in local, state and national politics to the end.
Pearl was five years old when she moved with her parents and two brothers to Rapid City, South Dakota. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1923 and began her teaching career in a country school that same year. She went on to graduate from Spearfish Normal Teachers College in 1925. Pearl married Clarence Hoel in 1928. They had one son, Jack who lives in Vanocher Canyon on the site of the original ice dam where parents conducted their ice delivery business for many years before the Indian Motorcycle Dealership business in Sturgis.
For the next six decades Pearl was “the hostess” for the hundreds and thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts that come to the Sturgis Rally and Races each year. Pearl never tired of meeting the many motorcyclists from all over the world that came to Sturgis, continuing her endless array of old friends who always stopped to see her.
As the Sturgis Rally and Races continued to grow with each passing year, Pearl took it all in stride, exhibiting a kindness and graciousness that will always be remembered.
